What Can Microdermabrasion Do for My Skin?

Discover the many ways in which this skin treatment can improve the tone and texture of your skin.microdermabrasion

Our skin says a lot about us. It can show that you used to be a heavy smoker or that you loved spending time in the sun during your earlier years. Unfortunately, a lot of our everyday habits can really take a toll on the health and appearance of our skin as we age. Luckily, our Honolulu, HI, dermatologists Dr. Kevin Dawson, Dr. Douglas Chun and Dr. Sarah Grekin are here to tell you about a cosmetic treatment that could significantly refresh and improve the look and feel of your skin.

What is microdermabrasion?

While the name might sound a bit intimidating, this cosmetic treatment is an effective and non-surgical way to improve the outer surface of the skin. During this procedure, our Honolulu, HI, dermatologists place a handheld wand over the face in the areas that you wish to treat.

As the wand is moved over the skin it helps to remove the outermost layers of the skin and the dead skin cells that have accumulated, which will immediately improve the look and feeling of your skin. Skin will feel much softer and suppler than before the procedure.

What skin problems can microdermabrasion treat?

Besides removing dead skin cells and revealing healthy, fresh new skin underneath this procedure is a great way to improve,

  • Skin's overall tone and texture
  • Hyperpigmentation, age spots and sun damage
  • Superficial scars (e.g. acne scars)
  • Skin’s natural elasticity

Will microdermabrasion hurt?

Many people choose to get microdermabrasion over other options like chemical peels because this procedure is a little less invasive and won’t be as uncomfortable. While microdermabrasion shouldn’t be painful it’s not uncommon for people to experience some soreness and tenderness in the treated areas after microdermabrasion. Skin will also be more sensitive to the sun so it’s important that you avoid being outside or that you apply a strong sunscreen while your skin heals from treatment.

If you are treating your entire face, the microdermabrasion procedure will take about a half hour to complete. It will take even less time if you are only treating a specific area or region such as the neck or back of your hands. After your treatment is over you’ll be able to go back to your normal activities.
