What You Need To Know About Skin Cancer

There are some factors which increase your risk of developing skin cancer, including if you have:

  • Spend excessive time in the sun
  • Have a family history of skin cancer
  • Fair skin and freckles

Whether you are at increased risk or average risk, early detection of skin cancer is critical. It’s important to do a self-exam of your skin regularly. You need to look for:

  • Large moles, at least 6 millimeters in diameter, that are changing
  • Moles with irregular, ragged borders
  • Moles with an asymmetrical shape
  • Moles with multiple colors
  • Moles that itch, bleed, or ooze
  • Any new growth that scabs or bleeds frequently.

You should also visit your dermatologist at least once each year for a comprehensive skin examination. Your dermatologist may recommend having an exam more often if you have a high risk of skin cancer.

One of the most effective ways to prevent skin cancer is to apply sunscreen every day. You should:

  • Wear sunscreen of at least SPF 30 daily, or at least SPF 50 if you are outside for an extended period of time
  • Wear hats, sunglasses, and other protective clothing
  • Try to stay out of direct sunlight between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, when ultraviolet rays are the most damaging
