Why Early Detection Matters

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but the good news is that it’s also one of the most treatable, especially when caught early. Regular self-checks and professional skin exams are key to identifying potential issues before they become serious. At Dawson Dermatology, we specialize in thorough skin cancer screenings and personalized care to ensure that any concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.

What To Look For: The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer

When it comes to detecting skin cancer, knowing what to look for can make all the difference. One of the most effective tools is the ABCDE rule, which helps you evaluate moles or spots on your skin for warning signs:

A for Asymmetry: Does one half of the mole look different from the other? Asymmetry can be a red flag.

B for Border: Are the edges irregular, blurred, or jagged? Healthy moles typically have smooth, even borders.

C for Color: Is the mole a mix of colors, such as brown, black, red, or white? Uneven coloring can indicate a problem.

D for Diameter: Is the spot larger than a pencil eraser (about 6mm)? Larger moles are worth keeping an eye on.

E for Evolving: Has the mole changed in size, shape, or color over time? Any noticeable changes should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to schedule a professional skin exam.

Other Warning Signs to Watch For

In addition to the ABCDEs, there are other symptoms that could indicate skin cancer. Look out for sores that don’t heal, new growths that appear suddenly, or spots that itch, bleed, or crust over. Skin cancer can also present as a flat, scaly patch or a firm, shiny bump. Remember, skin cancer doesn’t always look the same, so it’s important to stay vigilant and consult a dermatologist if you’re unsure.
